There’s more than one way to fight, too. You can use stealth to stay away from the baddies, place traps around your base, or square off when you really don’t have any better options. The underground sections make things feel totally different. Freedom – Freedom is easily one of The Forest biggest assets. You’re not lead towards a single task, and as such your sense of priorities change at your own pace depending on what you uncover. Building is also rewarding as every element has a use – for example, a shelter gives you a spot to regroup, while defence layouts and traps can make your base safer when enemies arrive.

Another discovery also seems like a good thing. The island is not simply a series of landscapes with a goal in the middle. There are caves to explore, things to gather, places to discover, and odd things to find that slowly start to make the world feel more integrated.

The survival elements are simple enough to get but not so much that they become entirely intuitive.

You still have to plan for food, gear, shelter and your next destination.

And, oh, multiplayer. Playing with friends just throws the flow of the game out of the window. Gathering logs could be the task of one person, while another roams off into a cave and blindly leads everyone into a fight that you’re not ready for. It’s kind of fun.

I think that the joy of the game is the uncertainty. You can do whatever you want: build, find, fight, conceal, or team up with friends-and the island has so many systems that usually mundane choices are memorable.

It can be tense. It can also be a little strange and soothing while all you’re doing is collecting supplies and tending your camp.

But you can’t entirely ignore what’s lurking just outside the glow of the firelight.
